Pig Tales by Iggy Oink
Pig Tales
Pig Tales by Iggy Oink – My name is Iggy Oink – I was born in rural Ontario – a descendent from a long line of Oink ancestry on the family farm of Johnny and Becka Rutherford. Johnny is the fifth generation Rutherford boy on the land – and pigs have been their business for decades.
I didn’t personally fall of a turnip truck but I did fall out of the back of a pick up truck bound for a neighbouring farm. Johnny meant well – he did name me Iggy – but I swear that boy didn’t know that I was gone and I can still imagine him taking off his cap – scratching his head and saying “but I loaded nine pigs”.
That was along time ago and my piglet remembrances are just that – memories. I still wonder about my Mom from time to time – but I know that regardless of the fact that she did not spend her life in a gestation crate and that they named her Gladdy – that she still ended up on a truck bound for slaughter. I fell out of that truck for a reason and Pig Tales is surely it. One day I’ll tell you all about my life and why I came to tell you stories on A Beating Heart.
Most humans don’t know much about pigs. They call us dumb and dirty and we are even reviled in some cultures. Humans call us pork and we are one of the most consumed meats in the world. I think if you knew us better that you might not be so inclined to slaughter us by the millions! So to better help you humans connect to our lives – I’m going to give you some daily Pig Tales!

There are 15 species of pigs. Little pigs can weigh about 20 pounds and really, really big ones can weight hundreds of pounds. We can live for up to 14 or 15 years of age – sort of like your family dog. We have 44 teeth!
