Pig Tales
Pig Tales by Iggy Oink – 6 – So here’s the thing about pigs – depending on the species, female pigs mature at 8 to 18 months of age and males at 8 to 10 months. A male pig is a boar. A female is called a gilt until she has piglets – at which point she is referred to as a sow. The average litter numbers between 7 to 12 piglets. Piglets actually know the noises and grunts of their own mothers and the mothers sing or talk to their litters as they are nursing.
Pigs – who are incredibly social animals – communicate with each other all the time and are very affectionate. They like to be close and to play and sleep together. They are rarely aggressive with one another – with the exception of a sow with newborn piglets. Pigs by nature are peaceful.
