Remembering Stolen Lives
Lest We Forget Them
Remembering Stolen Lives – it’s common place to read the story and see the image of a lost animal – especially those whose lives were stolen through abuse – corruption – greed, ignorance and betrayal. We say a silent prayer for them and then we move on. There will be a new story and another haunting photograph the next day.
To honour the animals who have gone too soon it is imperative to take a moment to reflect on their lives and to really see their essence. It’s important to remember that they had a mother and a father – perhaps brothers and sisters. They had a personality and a sense of fun. They had feelings and they wanted to play, to love, to feel joy and to live!
They looked out at the world through two soft, beautiful eyes. They knew fear, pain, depression and exhaustion. They recognized betrayal and they knew what confusion and loneliness felt like. More than anything else – just like humans – they wanted to be free.

I Wrote The Night Of The Freezing For Angel
The Night Of The Freezing
It was the night of the freezing
When all through the land
Doggies lay dying
With no helping hand.
The owners sat snug and warm in their homes
While judges complained about old legal tomes
The puppies were crying – their little pink pads
Turned purple with frostbite – these poor little lads.
Their mothers sat helpless – chained to the bone
While whimpers turned silent – now cold as a stone
Some humans cried foul – these deaths must all stop
But others just shrugged and said “go call a cop”.
By morning the snow coats a silent sweet hound
Where life had once sparkled – no longer a sound
And humans now rise and stretch in the dark
On a day when we’re missing another sweet bark!

I Wrote This For Them …
A Veal Calf
I know there is a beautiful place
Where kindness reigns with love and grace
Where Mother watches me sleep at night
And nothing can dim the morning light.
Instead my stall is dank and still
My legs are weak and sore
I can’t lie down or stretch or mill
My broken heart has lost its core.
Curled fists crash down on my head
I know in my soul I would rather be dead.
I struggle to turn – see the eyes of a brother
And briefly recall the sweet face of my Mother.
I dream of fields and warm sunshine
Of running free and life sublime
Instead I wait – can this be real
Yes it is – I’m becoming your veal.
And one day soon when I’m on your plate
Will you ever ponder my dreadful fate
And wonder why you stole my life
Why I paid so dearlyunder your knife!
