Murdered Dogs
Who Are The People Who Kill Them?
Murdered Dogs – When I get up in the morning and get ready to start work, I have a ‘to do list’ on my desk. I hope that by the end of the day that I will have accomplished the important things. In the course of my day, I will have had a positive influence on the lives of my clients. I take some measure of pride and satisfaction in contributing to a good outcome, and if a friend asks, “How was your day”? I can honestly, “It was good, thanks”.
I share dozens of shelter dog photographs every day. I no longer know if it matters. This a photograph of a shelter dog somewhere in Manhattan. Her name was Vera. She was about 7 years old. She was either a real stray or an ‘owner surrendered’ stray, turned into a kill shelter by a human coward. On intake, she was apparently shy and timid. In reality she was confused and frightened. Dogs can smell the rotten stench of death in a kill shelter. I shared Vera’s story last week pleading for someone to help her. No one did.
On Saturday, August 27, 2016 they murdered Vera. This beautiful, dog with the soft brown eyes is gone.
Her body is now an inconvenience, taking up space in the kill shelter. Probably stuffed in a garbage bag for disposal or sent for incineration.
So Who Are You?
Who Is Vera’s Killer?
Help Us Understand – Tell Us About Yourself – So We Don’t Make False Assumptions!
Did you hug Vera? Did you tell her not to be afraid? Did you tell her she was loved at the end and that you were sorry?
Did you take care with her death and make it as gentle as possible?
Do you rail against the system that tolerates ‘kill shelters’ – (an appalling oxymoron) for sure?
Are you a man or a woman?
Are you married? Do you have children? Do you have a pet at home?
As a young person – did you say – “I want to grow up and kill dogs”?
What do you say at cocktail parties and parents’ day – “Hell yes – I killed 18 dogs today. Hot damn, the world is a better place”.
Are you ever touched by a particular animal? Do you stop and say, “This isn’t right. Why have I lost my moral compass? How can I make this better”?
Do you excuse yourself by saying, “I need the money and besides, I’m following orders”?
Are you the person who makes the decision on who lives or dies? Is it a nice little power trip to point and say, “This one”?
Are you biassed against certain breeds of dogs?
Do you enjoy their fear on their death day?
Are you proud of your career?
Do you think, “I’m doing important work? I’m part of a system that kills millions and millions of animals every year around the world”?
Do you say, “Someome has to do it”?
Do you claim ‘to love’ animals”?
“Rest In Peace Vera”. We saw you. We cared. We held you in our hearts and we will remember you.
Your killer – not at all.
