Short Stories From 10 Years Ago – May 29, 2004
Dee-Vee-Dee
Short Stories From 10 Years Ago – May 29, 2004 – At the end of some days, there’s simply nothing better than a trip to the video store to rent a couple of DVD’s. A couple of years ago Eric and Dorothy gave me a combination VHS-DVD player for Christmas, just as the heads on my original VCR were breaking down.
The timing couldn’t have been better. At the time Dorothy started referring to DVD’s as Dee-Vee Dee’s with the emphasis on the last part of each word. It made us both laugh then, and we still do, whenever we think about renting a movie.
I had a busy day today with pergola errands to run and another visit to The Victorian Shoppe to see Chan. I paid for yesterday’s wrought iron brackets and picked up a couple of outdoor candle lanterns for my back yard and some black wrought iron hooks to hang plants inside the pergola. A trip to the closest Home Depot yielded twelve copper post caps for the corner columns, a new outdoor light fixture for the back of the house and a three foot high sprinkler for the garden hose.
It has two round copper rings, one smaller than the other. They rotate in opposite directions, the smaller one inside the larger one and in so doing they spray arcs of water all over the garden. I set it up in the front garden and it whirled in the sunshine as it watered the garden. It’s quite lovely and for $29.99 – truly a summer bargain! By the time I got home, John had made great progress on the pergola. The structure is up and the finish work will start tomorrow.
I did some cleaning up during the afternoon and by five o’clock it seemed like a Dee-Vee-Dee evening. It was off to the corner store for a perusal of the newest releases. Nothing much was left, so I picked up a copy of Kill Bill. After watching it, I think it will be necessary to see Kill Bill – Volume 2, for more of the sword swinging choreography and to see what happens to that darn Bill.
It reminded me of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon – a fun DVD evening. I now have a Meg Ryan, murder thriller to watch. That should be entertaining. I enjoy seeing if I can figure out the “who done it”, before the film is over. I have about a 50-50 record on that score.
Having the luxury of sitting in my warm and comfortable den with The Alphabet Boys to watch a couple of movies is a real treat. It certainly doesn’t replace seeing epic films on the silver screen. Master and Commander on a twenty inch television just wouldn’t be the same and films like Sea Biscuit and Gladiator are a must-see at a theatre.
However for a night of home entertainment, when going out just isn’t in the cards, nothing beats sweat pants, a tee-shirt, a good DVD and a glass of wine. Some snacks and a throw over my feet to chase away the last chill of a spring evening, and I’m all set. For $3.44 a pop it’s a bargain. Dee-Vee-Dee, here I come – let’s see if I can catch the killer in Meg’s silver screen life.
