Fish
I remember being in France one summer years ago. I wandered down to a dock in the little village where I was staying. Two gnarled fishermen were sitting on faded canvas and wooden chairs – smoking and watching the day. They had a big bucket between them. A wooden mallet lay on the dock. It seemed like a slow fish day. I sat down on the dock with a book to wile away some time.

Birds
Often – when I see a bird in flight – swooping low and climbing again – I’m reminded of the words of the profoundly beautiful poem written by John Gillespie. He died at the age of 19 during WW2. The poem was written about his experience as a pilot in The Royal Canadian Air Force – but it has always made me think about how a bird must see the world.

The Z0o – Circus – Rodeo – Calgary Stampede
I will be doing more blog posts in the future – but this is big topic. Animal welfare groups are working around the world to tackle it and to demand changes. People need to be aware of the cruelty that can be involved any time that wild animals are confined and held captive, ostensibly for the enjoyment of the public, but more realistially for the financial profit of the owners.

Donkeys – Burros – Mules – Ponies
If horses have served us well over the eons – then these smaller beasts of burden have been super-heros. They are helpers to mankind but are dismissed as equine royalty because they are sort of goofy looking – don’t prance and can’t run like the wind. But these strong, uncomplaining, sure-footed little beings with incredible endurance remain man’s servant and pack animal in countries all over the world.

Horses
Yes – the dog is man’s best friend – but has there ever been a more noble friend to man than a horse? It is believed that horses were first domesticated around 4000 BC. There are currently more than 300 breeds of horse worldwide. There are both a herd animal and a prey animal – so they can startle or bolt easily. Horses are creatures of habit and they like routine.

Free Willy Tugged At Our Heart Strings!
This movie spoke to the amazing bond between a boy and a whale and the boy’s deep desire to see him freed. With a Hollywood ending Willy jumped an enormous sea barricade wall and swam off into the sunset. The real life of Keiko who played Willy was not so grand. He was captured in 1977 at one year of age and after stays in Iceland and Marineland in Ontario – Keiko was sold to Reino Aventura in Mexico City. Plagued by skin lessions and poor health – Keiki was nonetheless the star of Free Willy in 1993.
