When we think of the wilderness – mountains, forests and plains – The Big Guys come to mind – incredible animals with massive horns, sleek coats, gentle eyes and soft muzzles. All around the world members of the deer, goat and sheep family populate the land. As with all animals – human encroachment – loss of habitat – human conflict – disease – government inaction – hunting and trophy killing are affecting various populations.

Puppy Mills
Puppy Mills also called Puppy Farms are a global atrocity. They are everywhere. The people who own and run them are ruthless, cruel, soulless and without remorse. It is a business and a big one world-wide. The dogs endure a life of appalling misery, neglect, cruelty and eventual death. In a puppy mill when a dog draws it’s final breath – it is a blessing.

Of all wild animals – perhaps some of the most majestic and elegant are the Big Cats. They need protection in every country. Many are endangered, with extinction in the wild for some species, a very real possibility. Of the 36 species of wild cats – it is estimated that about 75% of their numbers are in decline. As with all wild animals the reasons are numerous and complex.

Animal Fighting – The Brutality of Blood Sports
Humans have engaged in deplorable acts of blood sport for as long as they have lived. There seems to be a twisted sense of superiority – something primal and cruel in a person who relishes seeing a man fighting an animal or animals being forced to fight one another. If men want to fight each other – they have free will to do so. They have agreed to partake in a fighting match – they are making that decision of their own volition and they understand the consequences, the pitfalls and the possible rewards.

I grew up outside a small Ontario town north of Toronto. My family lived in a big, rambling house on 3 acres of land. All the kids along the highway played together – so I spent a lot of time at the farm across from my home. They had 2 cows – Onlucker a lovely, red Guernsey and Susie Q – a beautiful Holstein. When they had calves they all grazed in the fields together, and tried to make friends with Maude, a laid back Clydesdale mare.

Laws – Legislation
Mankind has engaged in acts of cruelty and barbarism for as long as he has walked the earth. Laws and legislation exist in every country to protect one man from another and they work with varying degrees of success. As we know from listening to the daily news, we are a long way from a kind and gentle world. I sometimes wonder if there is a genetic defect in humankind that prevents him from evolving past his current state.

In the last 2 years I have become more aware of the extent of local, national and global animal cruelty concerns. I’ve always known about the most high profile issues like bull fighting and puppy mills, but I had limited knowledge of the extent of cruelty and the atrocities faced by animals.
