On Vacation

Short Stories From 10 Years Ago – July 26, 2004 – Okay, it’s official – I am on vacation. I turned my pager off this morning about eleven o’clock and faxed a notice to the office to have my calls transferred to a colleague. I am free as a bird – sort of. I’m thinking that I don’t have a lot of business lined up for the fall, and what if I don’t get any new business.

Old Magazines – 2

Short Stories From 10 Years Ago – July 25, 2004 – I have to say, the advertising is absolutely the best part of these old publications. I’ve looked through dozens of them and these are some of the best ads.

Old Magazines

Short Stories From 10 Years Ago – July 24, 2004 – My mother’s antique shop was a source of intrigue for me when I was a kid. The sign down in front of the house simply said “Antiques” – and the log cabin that housed her wares had a sign over the door that read “Antique Shop” It never dawned on me before that her business didn’t have a name.

Teeth

Short Stories From 10 Years Ago – July 23, 2004 – There is nothing more engaging than a terrific smile, and the most important component of a lovely smile are the teeth. Rocking Chairs

Short Stories From 10 Years Ago – July 22, 2004 – Whenever I think of rocking chairs, I imagine Lily Tomlin from her Laugh-In days, sitting on the giant rocking chair and pretending to be a Edith Ann as she talked to the camera. It was a very funny sketch and a stationary chair just wouldn’t have had the same effect.

Dollar Stores

Short Stories From 10 Years Ago – July 21, 2004 – I like nothing better than a half hour to kill in a good dollar store. There have been discount stores for as long as I can remember. They existed long before Wal Mart invaded the world and set up shop in every available mall. Towers and Zellers have enjoyed a share of the consumers’ dollars for a long time, and while they’re not as up-market as the higher end department stores, their wares are varied and interesting.

Connecting The Dots

Short Stories From 10 Years Ago – July 20, 2004 – When I was a kid, my parents didn’t have a lot of discretionary income, so expensive and elaborate toys weren’t part of our lives. I had a couple of dolls – Stephanie my ballerina and Penelope a chubby doll with a cloth body and china arms, legs and head. I think I must have inherited her from someone else, because she also happened to be bald.
