Another Elephant Tragedy On The Tracks In India

Elephant Family makes us aware of an elephant tragedy on the tracks in India. Sadly, another big tusk elephant has been killed. The elephant was hit by a speeding train travelling at 90 kmph. His bodywas dragged 200 metres down the track before the train stopped. Those investigating the accident found that a portion of his tusk had already been broken off. It was stolen by a nearby opportunist.

This death is not an isolated case. At the start of 2013 – 13 elephants were killed in a two week period by speeding trains.  One of the females struck was heavily pregnant. The force of the impact forced the calf out of her body. It did not survive. Elephant tragedy on the tracks in India needs to become a rallying cry for these gentle giants!

Elephant Family is trying to prevent more elephants being killed by these trains.

 

In their recent campaign more than 1400 people wrote to the Indian Railways Minister. People are urging him to enforce speed limits for trains passing through elephant habitat. This elephant tragedy on the railroad tracks could have been prevented. The issue has been raised in the Indian Parliament. A specialist panel has now been formed to consider:

Reducing train speed in critical areas.

Providing proper signage on railway tracks.

Avoiding the movement of goods trains during night time.

The panel will be reporting back to the government with their recommendations. This must be stopped. This elephant tragedy on the tracks in India could have been prevented!

It is very clear that people all around the world care about elephants. They are willing to step up and get involved with animal concerns. Smart politicians recognize this growing movement. They need to consider how they handle these critical issues very carefully. Lack of accountability is becoming a very slippery slope for political leaders. Social media sites have incredible power. This outreach is far beyond what could have been imagined only a short time ago.
