The iWorry International March For Elephants
We Are Marching In Toronto! October 4, 2013 – The iWorry International March For Elephants – because legions of people globally refuse to let this iconic creature pass from our world. John Donne – English Poet 1572 – 1631 recognized the brilliance of the elephant when he said – “Nature’s greatest masterpiece – an elephant – the only harmless great thing” .
The innate goodness and intelligence of elephants – with their generosity of spirit, their ability to forgive and to grieve and their keen sense of family, friendship, loyalty and love show us that we can be better.
It is 2013 – how has humanity has failed to honour Donne’s wise appreciation of the elephant? Elephants have been hunted for centuries, by people far less aware than we are. When elephant populations could withstand this slaughter – their deaths although brutal, could be sustained. Now – with an elephant being killed every 15 minutes – we have reached a critical point in time. Elephants in the wild will be gone in the next 10 years.
Will we be the generation to let that happen? It is too late to say – let someone else do something. We must stand up and say “not in my lifetime” . We know that this brutally orchestrated slaughter is about ivory trinkets for Asia – the high end status seeker in Europe, Asia and North America – the trophy hunter, the religious statue market and the wildlife crime lords who worship money above all else. Governments are not doing enough. We – the people – must act.
Blood Ivory = greed, corruption, money, entitlement, crime and poverty. A perfect storm of circumstances.
I refuse to be part of the generation who stood idly by as the last great elephant trumpeted a mighty death call, fell to his knees and then crashed to the ground. There is no coming back from extinct. ENOUGH!
So we are marching for elephants on October 4, 2013 in 15 cities around the world – in events spear headed by the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Kenya. We have a very clear message. We will not allow this to continue. The poaching of elephants must stop. We do not want a world without elephants.
Independent marches are also happening on October 4th. In total – people in 31 cities will march in honour of elephants – with a clarion call – “we demand that elephants be protected”.
